Top 7 art galleries in Marrakech

Hey folks, the most popular articles on my blog are the ones i write for you travellers and explorers out there (Top 10 things to do in Essaouira and Marrakech as an example), so today, i have a new post to share with you guys. When you hear Arts and Marrakech in one sentence, the first thing people think about is craftsman, traditionnal forms of arts such as zellij, pottery, brodery, and all what’s sold and made in the old Medina. Rarely do people realize that Marrakech is one of the emerging cities in Africa when it comes to contemporary arts and culture. The red city’s cultural and artistic life is slowely, but surely expanding, evolving, transforming and blooming into something rich, diverse and extremely young and refreshing.

So today, i’m dedicating this article to talk about some of my personnal (and probably people’s favourites as well) top 7 art galleries in Marrakech, here it goes.

1) MMP+

I highly recommend the Marrakech Museum for Photography and Visual Arts  place because it has a vibe that i rarely find in common galleries, a real desire to share, build and express a passion. The pieces exposed or owned by the MMP+ are all extremely rare and unique and each time i visit the place for a new exposition, it’s like i’m discovering the museum all over again. The Marrakech Museum for Photography and Visual Arts is not just a regular art gallery or museum, it’s a world on its own, a refreshing, exciting and constantly changing world. Make sure to pay this gem a visit after a stroll in the Medina, i can assure you you’ll never regret it !

3) David Bloch Gallery

The David Bloch Gallery is one of the leading contemporary galleries in Morocco. Based in Marrakech, the gallery is a platform for modern artists exploring innovative forms and aesthetics via a wide range of artistic media. You will find everything from graffiti, sculpture, abstract pieces and more figurative works.

Matisse Art Gallery, Marrakech

4) Matisse art gallery

This gallery space carries some of Morocco’s most famous names in contemporary art, including Mahi Binebine, Farid Belkahia and Hassan El Glaoui. But what’s nice is that even emerging and underground Moroccan artists can be found from time to time. I like how every piece in this gallery (Sculpture, painting etc) is put at exactly the right and proper time and space; it’s the one gallery where every detail counts, and that makes the experience even better

5) Le jardin

Le Jardin is a small riad in the heart of the medina transformed into a coffee shop and open art space, it’s one of the most fun and lively places to get a feel for Morrocan art. I remember visiting the establishement for the first time while attending the Fashion-artistic event The Souk, i remember feeling amazed by how beautiful and laid back the atmosphere was. It’s the perfect spot to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the Medina. With regular changing exhibitions, cult film projections, music and cultural events and much more, Le Jardin is a relaxed but incredibly active space to discover the latest cultural developments in the red city.

6) Gallery 127

If you are a photography lover, Gallery 127 is a must-visit in Marrakesh.  the gallery focuses on the works of both established and up-and-coming photographers. One of the more unique galleries in Marrakech, this is a space that truly lets the art do all the talking.  Galerie 127 is more than just a place to enjoy art – with many workshops taking place, you also have the opportunity to delve deeper into everything from the history of photography itself, to gaining a deeper understanding of the politics behind the images.

7) Dar Bellarj

As Marrakech’s premier arts centre, the Dar Bellarj features a range of exhibitions and shows throughout the year, focusing on mediums such as film, photography, and textiles. Alongside the exhibitions, there is a programme of art workshops and meet-ups.

That’s all for today, make sure to tell us your favourite spots in Marrakech or discuss the ones i talked about in the comment section down bellow. Peace out,

FZ
